Origami Folding Tips

Origami, from the Japanese ori (to fold) and kami (paper), began in the 6th century when Buddhist monks introduced paper to Japan. The print-and-fold crafts and easy diagrams are designed to help children with fine motor skills, directions and hand eye coordination. Some basic origami folding tips:

Print and cut out patterns carefully.
Fold with clean, dry hands.
Follow the instructions. Study the diagrams and be patient.
Be precise: fold each crease well, flattening the creases by running your fingertip over the fold.
Folding the paper away from you is easier than folding towards you.
Be creative...use your origami on greeting cards, holiday decorations, table place cards and bookmarks.

Meet the ‘Ōpe’ape’a—Official State Land Mammal of the state of Hawai’i! About 10,000 years ago, a relative of the modern North American Hoary Bat crossed some 2,300 miles of ocean to the Hawaiian islands by the strength of its own leathery wings, becoming the only endemic land mammal in the state of Hawai’i…and then proceeded to shrink! This bat is now 30-40% smaller than the mainland species, with males weighing a meager 15-18g. And yet the ‘Ōpe’ape’a will fly more than 12 miles one-way in the course of a single night—that’s quite a distance for a 13-in. wingspan! Photos courtesy of Bryant Olsen and F.
